HENRY COUNTY, Virginia — A former sheriff’s deputy from Henry County, Virginia, has been taken into custody in North Carolina on a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery following an independent probe conducted by the Virginia State Police.
The Henry County Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday that Michael Kevin Cagle Jr. was arrested in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Cagle is currently being detained without bond while awaiting extradition to Virginia.
The charge stems from an incident on November 26, 2025, when Cagle responded to a call regarding a breaking and entering in progress. Following the initial response, an individual was arrested on a breaking and entering charge as well as an outstanding felony warrant, and was subsequently transported to the Henry County Adult Detention Center.
According to authorities, a verbal dispute took place between Cagle and the detained individual outside the detention facility. The confrontation escalated when Cagle utilized physical force against the arrestee. No injuries were reported from the encounter.
Sheriff’s office supervisors learned of the physical confrontation shortly after it occurred and initiated an internal review. The administrative investigation concluded that Cagle had violated multiple department policies, leading to the immediate termination of his employment with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.
Following the dismissal, Henry County Sheriff Wayne Davis requested an independent criminal investigation from the Virginia State Police and the Henry County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. The state law enforcement investigation resulted in the misdemeanor assault and battery charge against Cagle.
Sheriff Davis issued a statement reaffirming the department’s focus on institutional transparency and public accountability, emphasizing that allegations of misconduct will be handled swiftly and professionally by the administration.
