JACKSONVILLE, Florida — A veteran teacher at Baldwin Middle-Senior High School was arrested Friday morning on a charge related to misconduct with a student, according to school and law enforcement officials.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office took James Mulvey into custody on a charge of offenses against students by authority figures. School Principal Mike Townsend disclosed the arrest to families via an official notification, noting that the specific allegations involved an authority figure soliciting or engaging in a romantic relationship with a student.
Following the arrest, Duval County Public Schools reassigned Mulvey to an off-campus role where he will have no contact with students. The reassignment will remain in place for the duration of the concurrent criminal and internal human resources investigations.
Mulvey has been employed at the school since October 2016. District records indicate he briefly resigned for personal reasons in June 2022 but was rehired by the school system in October 2022.
In his message to families, Principal Townsend described the allegations as deeply concerning while noting that the presumption of innocence applies. He emphasized that the district considers student safety its highest priority and stated that any individual who violates the trust required to protect and support students will be held accountable.
The district’s internal review is being handled by the Professional Standards department. School officials have not disclosed the specific circumstances or details that prompted the investigations, and law enforcement authorities have not released additional information regarding the events leading up to the arrest.
