GRAFTON, W.Va. — A high school teacher and athletic coach has been arrested following allegations of attempted sexual abuse involving a student, local authorities announced.
Zachary Shumaker, 26, faces criminal accusations after a complaint filed by the Grafton Police Department detailed allegations of inappropriate physical contact and explicit remarks directed toward a student.
Shumaker’s employment at Grafton High School includes roles as a classroom teacher, assistant football coach, and head wrestling coach.
The investigation began after a female student reported Shumaker’s alleged conduct to another teacher at the school. The information was subsequently relayed to the high school principal, who then contacted local law enforcement officials.
Following his arrest, Shumaker was formally arraigned in Taylor County Magistrate Court.
Judicial officials set his bond at $50,000. Under the conditions of his release, if Shumaker secures bond, he will be subject to home confinement and required to wear an electronic ankle monitoring device.
