LAKE COUNTY, Indiana. — A Northwest Indiana police chief apprehended in Ohio on Friday is now facing multiple criminal charges in Indiana, authorities announced.
New Chicago Police Chief Earl Mayo was taken into custody by law enforcement personnel in Clark County, Ohio. Following the arrest, formal charges were filed against him in Lake County, Indiana, on Sunday.
Mayo faces criminal counts of official misconduct, obstruction of justice, theft, and unlawful possession of an anabolic steroid. As part of the investigation, authorities conducted a search of Mayo’s residence located in Merrillville.
The arrest was confirmed on Saturday by Mayo’s father, Jerry Williams, who serves as an Indiana State Police Major and is a candidate for Lake County sheriff.
In a public statement released Saturday, Williams expressed deep familial concern regarding the allegations against his son, noting that the troubling accusations conflict with the values his family established. Williams emphasized that his son is presumed innocent under the criminal justice system and stated that the legal process must proceed impartially. He added that if the government’s allegations are proven true, Mayo must accept responsibility and face the legal consequences.
Municipal administrators for the city of New Chicago have been contacted for additional details regarding the status of the police chief.
