FORT WORTH, Texas — A former SWAT officer with the Mesquite Police Department was taken into custody following an hours-long standoff that began after he allegedly threatened a family member with a firearm, authorities announced.
The incident occurred on Friday, May 1, when officers with the Fort Worth Police Department responded at approximately 8:20 p.m. to a residence located in the 3800 block of Chisos Rim Trail. Upon arrival, responding officers determined that a victim was being actively threatened with a handgun.
According to a press release issued by law enforcement, responding personnel learned that the suspect, identified as Alexander Smith, had discharged a firearm inside the home. The victim informed responding officers that Smith had barricaded himself inside a bedroom and declared that he would not surrender without a fight.
The Mesquite Police Department confirmed in an official statement that Smith was previously employed as a police officer with their agency from November 2007 to December 2018. According to reporting from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Smith had served as a member of the department’s tactical team during his tenure.
Due to the barricade situation, the Fort Worth Police Department’s Directed Response Unit and SWAT team were dispatched to the scene to assist. Following a standoff lasting several hours, tactical units successfully took Smith into custody without further incident.
Following the arrest, law enforcement personnel seized multiple weapons from the residence. Officials have filed for an emergency protective order in connection with the case.
