North Carolina Police Officer Suspended After Video Shows Him Punching Suspect During Arrest

SHELBY, North Carolina — A Shelby police officer has been placed on administrative suspension following the circulation of a social media video that depicts him striking a female suspect during an arrest attempt on Friday.

The footage, captured by a Ring camera and provided to WCNC Charlotte, shows an officer pulling the woman to the ground and repeatedly hitting her in the head. Another officer arrives afterward to assist in restraining the suspect, who is then handcuffed and taken into custody.

Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser addressed the matter in a video message published on the city’s Facebook page, characterizing the recorded events as disturbing and inappropriate. Fraser announced that the officer responsible for punching the woman has been suspended from duty while an internal investigation is conducted.

Fraser stated that the inappropriate use of force is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by himself or the department. He added that community trust serves as the cornerstone of law enforcement, noting that incidents undermining that trust impact the entire department and community.

Authorities have not released the identity of the suspended officer. The woman involved in the incident faces charges of breaking and entering, resisting arrest, and assaulting a government official.
