Former North Carolina Prison Lieutenant Arrested Following Thirty Five Thousand Dollar Embezzlement Investigation

PENDER COUNTY, North Carolina — A former state corrections officer who held the rank of lieutenant has been arrested following an investigation into the embezzlement of approximately $35,000 in state property, authorities announced.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation arrested Rannie Lee Boney on Wednesday morning, May 26. The 48-year-old former official is facing one felony count each of embezzlement by a public official, obtaining property by false pretense, and uttering a forged instrument.

Boney, a resident of Kenansville, was employed at the Pender Correctional Institution. According to state arrest warrants, the alleged criminal activity took place between March 2024 and November of last year.

The state Department of Adult Correction initiated the case and formally requested assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation on March 10, following reports of financial impropriety involving a prison staff member. Beyond the primary embezzlement allegations, the warrants state that Boney is also accused of forging her official employee time sheet.

The property in question belonged directly to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction.

Boney surrendered voluntarily to law enforcement authorities on Wednesday morning at the New Hanover County Courthouse. Following her surrender, she was released after receiving a $20,000 unsecured bond. Her initial court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, May 28, at 9:00 a.m. at the Pender County Courthouse.
