New York City Mayor Fires Sheriff Anthony Miranda, Appoints Whistleblower Edwin Raymond

NEW YORK CITY, New York — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has terminated the employment of New York City Sheriff Anthony Miranda and named former police lieutenant and whistleblower Edwin Raymond as his replacement.

The newly appointed sheriff served with the New York City Police Department for 15 years. Following his law enforcement tenure, Raymond authored a book detailing his personal experiences within the department. He also composed a 2016 piece for the New York Times Magazine under the title A Black Police Officer’s Fight Against the N.Y.P.D.

In a statement regarding the appointment, Mayor Mamdani praised the new sheriff, stating that Edwin Raymond embodies the principled, courageous, and justice-oriented attributes that the residents of New York deserve from a public servant.

The Department of Investigation previously scrutinized Miranda, who originally assumed the sheriff position in 2022. The investigative probe focused on his regulatory enforcement actions against unlicensed smoke shops and the handling of currency confiscated during those specific law enforcement operations.

Mayor Mamdani did not provide an explicit explanation regarding the decision to dismiss Miranda from the post.
