Gretna Preschool Teacher Terminated Following Arrest for Classroom Child Abuse

GRETNA, Nebraska — A preschool teacher at Harvest Hills Elementary has been fired by the school district after being arrested for child abuse involving a student in her classroom, school administrators announced.

Tammy Haberer, 58, was taken into custody and booked into the Sarpy County jail. She faces one count of committing intentional child abuse without injury.

The Gretna Public School District stated that upon first learning of the incident, officials immediately removed Haberer from the classroom and placed her on administrative leave. School representatives then notified the parents of the involved student, launched an internal investigation, and contacted local authorities.

Following an initial review of the case, the school district formally canceled Haberer’s employment contract on April 24.

Travis Lightle, superintendent of Gretna Public Schools, stated that the safety, health, and emotional well-being of students remain the top priority of the school district. Lightle expressed deep disturbance regarding Haberer’s actions, noting that educators are entrusted with the most vulnerable children and are expected to maintain the highest standards of care. The superintendent added that the district will take immediate and uncompromising action to protect students whenever that trust is broken.

District administrators confirmed they are continuing to cooperate with the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services as the investigation proceeds.
