BURGAW, North Carolina — A former corrections lieutenant is facing multiple felony charges including embezzlement and fraud following an investigation by state authorities into financial improprieties at Pender Correctional Institution.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation arrested 48-year-old Rannie Lee Boney, charging her with one count of obtaining property by false pretenses, one count of embezzlement by a public official, and one count of uttering a forged instrument. According to the arrest warrants issued in the case, Boney was employed by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction at the time of the alleged offenses.
The criminal investigation began on March 10, when officials with the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction contacted the State Bureau of Investigation to report allegations of misconduct and financial irregularities involving a staff member at the facility.
Following the conclusion of the state inquiry, Boney surrendered to law enforcement authorities on Wednesday morning, May 26, at the New Hanover County Courthouse. After being processed on the three felony counts, she was released after receiving a $20,000 unsecured bond.
