ALBION, Michigan — An armed, off-duty Albion public safety officer was arrested early Saturday morning for operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, police officials announced.
The officer, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was taken into custody on May 9. Following the arrest, the Albion Department of Public Safety placed the officer on administrative leave pending the outcome of a comprehensive internal investigation.
The incident began at 1:59 a.m. when Albion Department of Public Safety personnel initiated a traffic stop close to the junction of North Superior Street and East Pine Street.
Upon pulling the vehicle over, responding officers recognized the driver as a fellow member of the department who was off duty at the time. During the interaction, officers observed signs indicating that he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
To maintain objectivity, the Albion Department of Public Safety transferred the field investigation over to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies subsequently arrested the off-duty officer on charges of operating while intoxicated and possession of a firearm while under the influence.
In a statement published on social media, the Albion Department of Public Safety characterized the event as unfortunate and emphasized its commitment to community transparency and organizational accountability. Department leadership stated that all further inquiries regarding the ongoing investigation should be channeled directly to Chief Aaron Phipps.
