Washington County Sheriff Deputy Resigns Following Driving Under the Influence and Fleeing Arrest in Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas — A Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputy step down from his position on Monday following his weekend arrest on multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated and resisting law enforcement.

Corey Whelchel, 48, of Hindsville, was taken into custody on Sunday, May 31. He faces several allegations, including suspicion of driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, fleeing, and refusing to submit to an impaired driving chemical test.

Additionally, authorities cited Whelchel for unlawfully operating an all-terrain vehicle on a state highway or public street.

Following the incident, Whelchel submitted his resignation from the law enforcement agency on Monday. Kelly Cantrell, the spokesperson for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed the resignation.
