U.S. Navy Sailor Arrested for Battery of National Guardsman in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — A United States Navy sailor was taken into custody early Friday morning following an alleged physical confrontation with a member of the Louisiana National Guard.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:44 a.m. at the intersection of Frenchmen and Chartres streets, according to the New Orleans Police Department. The confrontation took place while multiple military branches were in the city to celebrate Sail 250 and the arrival of the Tall Ships fleet.

Authorities stated that the sailor was injured during the altercation after being taken to the ground by National Guard members. Following the incident, the sailor was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The New Orleans Police Department confirmed that once the sailor is medically cleared and released from the hospital, he will be booked on two criminal charges. He faces one count of battery of a police officer and one count of simple criminal damage to property.

The names of the individuals involved have not been released at this time. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the dispute is ongoing.
